Travelling in winter opens up a world of accessible ski holidays in the renowned Alpine resorts as well as lesser-known locations in both Western and Eastern European countries. You may even yearn for a fairytale Christmas escape, in which case the frost-tipped forests, frozen lakes and seasonal associations of Lapland will be for you.
Each country within the continent is easily reached by air, road and rail and your journey can easily become an integral part of your experience. Rail travel in Europe is highly enjoyable - try the scenic Glacier Express in Switzerland or take the famous Orient Express to Venice. There are also a great range of river and sea cruises taking in classic European scenery and attractions, and driving is easy and pleasurable in most countries.
