There's no better way to get under the skin of a country than to visit its cities. You'll get a real feel for the culture, whether from visiting museums, art galleries and festivals, or just wandering through the streets and sampling the café life. And you're guaranteed to pack twice as much experience in than if you were just sitting on a beach (as nice as that is). Also, cities are as weather proof as you can get - even if the rain does come down, there is always something to do!
There really is a city for everyone and the best thing about living in the UK is that there are literally hundreds of fantastic city break destinations within a couple of hours' flight time. Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Seville, Venice and Madrid are just some of our favourites, with a diverse range of modernity, history, culture, great food and drink, and great things to do.
There are so many destinations to choose from and sometimes the best holidays come from going off the beaten track and experiencing lesser known places.
Of course, there's no reason why you can't go a bit further afield and make a city the focus of a long-haul trip. From New York and Boston to Las Vegas and San Fransisco, the USA mixes modern convenience and easy travel with vibrant, energetic destinations that are perfect for a longer city break. Or why not incorporate a city stay into a wider holiday itinerary?
