Amie Agent, Ongar A little about me I started at Flitch Travel in October 2025 after being a customer myself and having had first-hand experience of the customer-focused Flitch Travel way. When I saw this position advertised, I thought my background of 15 years’ customer service in banking and my passion for travel would be the perfect match. I have always enjoyed planning my own adventures and felt it would be amazing to help customers tick off their bucket list destinations, celebrate a special occasion, or even visit a new destination that I’ve visited myself and can therefore answer questions they may have. I live locally and worked in the same building as the Ongar shop when it was Barclays Bank. I have been married for 10 years and love spending time with my husband and family at our holiday home by the coast. I love to read books and enjoy going running when I get the chance. Each day brings new knowledge, and every day is unique, and incredibly rewarding. Providing exceptional customer service and witnessing repeat customers return is a wonderful feeling. Most memorable holiday? Our Borneo Orangutan & Rainforest Adventure last June, in celebration of our 10th wedding anniversary, was truly unforgettable. We initially thought the highlight would be meeting an orangutan at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, but we quickly realized how mistaken we were. Each day offered its own thrill, packed with adventures that included not only observing orangutans at the sanctuary but also spotting a wild pregnant female orangutan building her nest by the riverbank. We enjoyed river safaris where we saw pygmy elephants, the smallest elephants in the world, feeding on the long grasses along the bank. A nighttime expedition at the Rainforest Discovery Centre revealed wildlife we had never encountered before, such as flying squirrels, a flying lemur, a small green viper, and a slow loris! We will always cherish our stay at the jungle lodge, listening to monkeys jumping on the roof throughout the night, as well as our time at the tea plantation, which offered breathtaking views. It was an extraordinary wildlife experience on a momentous occasion, and we even planted our own tree as a lasting tribute to this once-in-a-lifetime trip. Where to next? I am heading to Cape Verde in May for a relaxing beach holiday. This will be my third visit to the beautiful island of Boa Vista. In June, I'm embarking on my first-ever cruise, a short trip on a Royal Caribbean ship from Southampton to Bruges. I can’t wait to try something new! Then in October, I have booked another first—our first self-drive trip to Canada. I can't express how excited I am about this next adventure; I've wanted to visit Canada for a long time, and I'll finally be exploring Banff, Lake Louise, and Emerald Lake. Lastly, I've scheduled a South Africa safari for 2026. I have a deep passion for wildlife and can't wait for our second safari—the first being nearly 15 years ago in Kenya, where we got engaged. It will surely bring back wonderful memories, and hopefully this time we will spot a rhino, one of the Big Five that we missed in Kenya. Top travel tip? Plan your days to get the most out of holidays and adventures and, if you have time, do an idea of an itinerary. That could be booking those must-do excursions or attractions, to booking that one bar or restaurant you really want to experience. If I had to pick one destination… I think Italy would be a great choice - I love the architecture, food, the wine of course, and the people. I hope to visit Italy much more in the future but I have high hopes for Canada too! We need to talk… about jet fuel. 7 May 2026 Jet fuel shortages aren’t what the headlines suggest. Here’s what’s really happening - and why your holiday is still safe. I can only liken the situation to when we were told we were going to run out of toilet roll during Covid. We all went bonkers buying toilet roll, stacked cupboards full of it, and supermarket shelves were emptied. We never ran out of toilet roll - there was no shortage. It happened again when the Ukraine war started. We were told we were going to run out of petrol, so everyone rushed to fill their cars to the brim and queued along the high street at the nearest petrol station. We never ran out of petrol - there was no shortage. The UK is not running out of jet fuel - there is no shortage. The UK sources jet fuel from a range of places; it does not come from one single source, and fuel purchasing is not managed on a week-by-week basis. Jet fuel is typically secured months in advance, with prices agreed ahead of time. Yes, there have been some disruptions, but on the grand scale of the aviation industry they are minimal. In reality, most travellers would not even notice that any operational changes have been made. Older aircraft with four engines naturally use more fuel to fly, so some airlines have temporarily reduced services using older aircraft and moved passengers onto newer, more efficient two-engine aircraft instead. It reduces fuel consumption, lowers costs and cuts pollution - it’s a no-brainer. For example, Air Canada operates 38 flights a day to New York. They have cancelled four flights a day until August, with those services returning in October. The remaining 34 flights continue to operate daily as normal. Air France has increased the cost of a long-haul ticket by around £21 per person. American Airlines and Delta have increased hold luggage charges by approximately £7.80. These changes are incredibly small and do not affect your hard-earned, well-deserved summer holiday plans. Our favourite UK operators, including Jet2, EasyJet and TUI, have all confirmed they will not increase the cost of your holiday after booking - that is guaranteed. Holidays are continuing exactly as normal. Flights are taking off, people are travelling, and clients are returning home safely having enjoyed fantastic holidays. The sun is shining, the bar is open and the beaches are waiting for you. What we have seen is a shift in holiday habits due to unrest in the Middle East and UK Government advice surrounding travel to the UAE. With Stansted Airport so close to us, Emirates flights to Dubai have become hugely popular over recent years - not just for Dubai holidays themselves, but as a hub for destinations such as Australia, Thailand, Bali and the Indian Ocean. Understandably, some clients are now choosing to fly directly to their onward destination rather than route through Dubai. Others are still travelling via Dubai as planned, with flights operating normally and service remaining as good as ever. Our clients have travelled and returned without issue. Personally, I do expect prices to rise ever so slightly towards the end of this year and into 2027 as airlines slowly claw back increased fuel costs. In reality, though, you probably won’t notice much difference as travel prices naturally rise year on year anyway. The smartest thing you can do right now is simply book early. Summer 2027 is already on sale, deposits remain very low, and many holidays can still be secured from as little as £60 per person. Once booked, your price is locked in with no surprise additional costs later on. The same applies for this year’s holidays too - book now while prices remain lower, free child places are still available, seats together on the aircraft can still be secured, and those best sea-view rooms are still there waiting. I do expect demand to increase quickly once tensions in the Middle East settle, and when that happens prices and availability are likely to shift very fast. While holidays are continuing as planned, it is also reassuring to remember that, in the extremely unlikely event a flight is cancelled for any reason, there are strong protections in place for UK travellers. That means you will not lose the money paid for your flights and, if travelling on a package holiday, those protections extend to the full holiday package too. I hope this has helped put a little perspective on the situation. Cruising myths debunked! 29 November 2025 ‘You’ll never get me on a cruise ship’! We’ve heard it so many times, yet over 2m people from the UK do take cruise holidays each year. Two million people embarking on a cruise, a landmark which was surpassed two years earlier than predicted. River cruising has also seen growth in popularity, with passengers from the UK increasing. Perhaps most tellingly, nine out of ten first-time cruisers take another cruise within 12 months. Don’t knock it until you try it Cruising has something for everyone and if booked right with some keen research you’ll soon be calling yourself a seasoned cruiser. The itinerary and visiting ports of call is a small factor to consider but most importantly the cruise liner that you sail with will be what makes or breaks your relationship with holidays at sea, there are over 50 different liners out there, they all offer something different, they have their own target market and its our job as your local trusted travel agent to find your match. Let’s start the match making right now and debunk the top cruising myths... Cruising is for the elderly: I think I need to start this debunking by highlighting how our own perceptions of what can be considered ‘elderly’ is changing , with people remaining fitter, healthier, and more active for longer than before - cruise liners are reimagining their facilities onboard to cater to this. Over the last few years, the average UK cruise passenger age has remained largely unchanged at 56, an age below retirement, although internationally the average cruiser is younger still at only 46, which is the lowest average age for 20 years. Cruising is now less likely to be viewed as just for elderly thanks to the rise in mega-ships that offer non-stop fun and entertainment for families, from bumper cars to zip lining and waterparks, there’s more onboard these ships than your average beachfront hotel. We have also seen new cruise liners such as Virgin Voyages offering adult only sailings with a Virgin twist, their target market is aged in their 30-40’s their branding is hitting the spot with the use of social media and well-known influencers. The idea of an average or typical cruisers age is getting weaker as the amount of choice increases, widening the appeal. From the age of 0 to 100, there is a cruise ship for you. Cruising is too expensive: Cruising was considered to be almost exclusively for the wealthy. Some of the ticket prices can look expensive at first glance but cruising is one of the best-value-for-money styles of holiday you could have, as it’s so inclusive. A typical cruise will include accommodation, entertainment, full board dining, beverages with breakfast, visiting many destinations and the service of a friendly crew. We see real value for money when it comes to activities, if we look at the price for a family of four to go out for lunch (£60), go on the bumper cars (£10), have ice creams (£15), go zip lining (£70), go swimming (£25), watch a show (£130), take part in a yoga class (£20) that comes to £330, if they were onboard one the family-friendly ships it would cost £0 as its all included and can be enjoyed every day! Some cruise lines are more inclusive – there are several ocean and river cruise lines which throw in all-inclusive drinks, some include all excursions while others offer a great deal of flexibility with prepaid drink and dining packages as optional extras. Bundles can be really personalised to suit your priorities. It’s a bit like buying a bundle for satellite TV, you may be interested in the sports or films packages, but won’t need the documentaries; similar bundles can often be found for cruising. I would be seasick: I have some sympathy with this concern that makes some non-cruisers hesitant to cruise, as I am a sufferer. However, the comparisons non-cruisers make with ferries is unfair and not reflective of a cruise experience, particularly with continuing advances in technology for cruising. There is also an important distinction in a ferry’s purpose as a means of transportation between A and B for shorter distances, and a cruise ship’s purpose as a style of holiday, so comfort is of greater importance and consideration when cruising. Every cruise ship has stabilisers fitted, these work superbly, with mini-golf, pool tables and a bar suspended on the side of the ship; the captain needs to keep it as steady as can be. Nobody wants a game hindered by rolling balls or a cocktailed swished in one’s face. As a passenger onboard are the world’s largest cruise ship during a hurricane, I can confidently say seasickness is not a worry. I’ll be stuck at sea with nothing to do: Another classic cruising myth. Itineraries vary massively, and days at sea will largely depend on that; for example, cruising from Southampton for a Mediterranean cruise will entail more days at sea than flying straight to the Med and boarding the ship on arrival, a trans-Atlantic voyage is largely about the journey, rather than the destinations, as ports of call are few and far between. This will be down to personal taste, and for many people, days at sea are a chance to relax and enjoy the ship’s facilities. However, whichever itinerary you pick, you wouldn’t be ‘stuck at sea with nothing to do’. Put simply; you can do as much or as little as you like. Nowadays, ships are packed full of activities and onboard facilities, and the bigger the ship, the more choices you have. Some ships have become a destination in their own right. Cruising is too formal: This cruising myth may well be related in part to the perceptions of cruising being exclusively for the wealthy and/or elderly, but like those myths it is not reflective of the reality of cruising. Traditionally, cruise ships had quite strict dress codes, particularly for formal night plus there were set dining times, at a set table, where you’d sit each night. Richard Branson himself said that Virgin Voyages would ‘throw out the traditional cruise dining rule book’ and get rid of the ‘stuffy formalities.’ Although Branson, who has never gone on a cruise before, does not seem to realise that this so-called cruise rule book has already long been thrown out by cruise lines, as nowadays, things have changed. Dress codes have loosened a lot, with some cruise lines opting for a ‘country club’ atmosphere, and formal night as an option only. Some have even completely abolished formal nights. Dining has also become more open, partly because ships nowadays have a number of different dining venues on offer. It is very much your cruise, your choice on attire, your choice on dining venue. Cruising really is for everyone, it’s not just for the rich, the formal, or the older crowd. Sustainable travel - what’s really changing behind the scenes? 6 May 2026 When people think about travel, sustainability probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But after attending ABTA’s Sustainable Travel Conference in London recently, one thing became very clear - the travel industry is changing, and many tour operators, airlines, cruise companies and destinations are already making significant improvements behind the scenes. The conference brought together travel companies from across the industry to discuss the real challenges facing tourism today, from climate change and carbon reduction to human rights, workers’ welfare and protecting destinations for future generations. A major theme throughout the day was collaboration. Sustainable travel isn’t something one company can solve alone - it requires destinations, operators, airlines, hotels and tourism boards all working together with shared goals and open communication. One of the most interesting talks came from Inghams, the winter sports specialist. Climate change is already having a direct impact on ski destinations, with some resorts experiencing too little snowfall, while others face extreme weather conditions and unsafe levels of snow. In response, Inghams are adapting how they operate, introducing more rail travel options, working alongside organisations including WWF in Finland, and developing over 100 sustainability-focused actions as part of their “Championing the Great Outdoors” programme. Intrepid Travel shared some particularly inspiring examples of tourism giving back directly to local communities. In Morocco, now one of their biggest destinations, they support projects including boarding schools for young women in remote mountain areas where access to education can be extremely limited. Following the devastating earthquake in 2023, they also helped deliver food, water and emergency aid to villages across the region. Alongside this, they are introducing electric vehicle transfers and continuing to work closely with local tourism authorities to better understand the needs of each destination. The cruise sector is also making major operational changes. Carnival Cruise Line explained how newer ships, improved technologies and better efficiency are helping reduce emissions, despite continued growth in passenger numbers. Since 2019, they have reduced food waste by almost half, removed many single-use plastics across their fleet, introduced water refill stations and expanded recycling programmes both onboard and within participating ports. What stood out most throughout the conference was that sustainable travel is not simply about telling people not to travel. It’s about travelling more responsibly, supporting destinations properly, protecting local communities, and ensuring the places we love visiting today are still there for future generations to enjoy. There is still a long way to go across the industry, but it was encouraging to see just how much work is already happening in the background - much of which travellers may never even realise.
